Me

It seems that most of my defining moments in my career were a very organic process. I’ve never forced a career choice, but rather let my intuition guide me in what felt right at the time. I use my knowledge of visual communication to keep me focussed on what to do next. You can’t break the visual rules unless you know them.

Photography started teaching me in 1998 when I enrolled at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, Port Elizabeth. I loved my student years and being surrounded by the art community in the Eastern Cape.

After my studies, I worked in Johannesburg as a freelance photographer in the advertising industry and thereafter overseas for a couple of years, learning videography and specialising in studio portraiture.

In 2004 I started working at the Independent Newspaper group and did mostly work for the Star Newspaper and Pretoria News. This laid the groundwork for a long career as a newspaper photo-journalist. My transition to the news department of Media24 was again a very comfortable transition in my career. I loved working as a news photographer, covering everything from hard news stories to travel and sports.

I’ve always placed a lot of emphasis on the person I’m photographing. Getting to know them and trying to give the viewer a glimpse of the true character of my subjects.

During my working years, I studied part-time for a degree in Visual Communication.
This included Film studies, Sound studies, Multimedia, Graphic Design, Concept Development, and understanding visual culture today.
Improving my skills this way meant that I can easily translate the visual culture of photography and multimedia into different mediums, whereas the image output stays grounded in editorial work and the outcome takes many shapes.

Over the last five years I was employed by Fairlady magazine where I managed the photographic department and arranged and co-ordinated all image assignments.
This included story boarding, capturing realistic images as the assignment dictates while servicing a wide variety of photographic needs, both in studio setting as well as on location.

Photography teaches me to see beyond what’s in front of me, and let a situation unfold to wait for the right moment to capture visual culture into different mediums. The image output stays grounded in editorial work and the outcome takes many shapes.

The images on this website are my work.
